The best government your money can buy

My New Mexico Independent column today is partly a rehash of this post on the Block scandal, but goes farther in meditating on the differences between our purportedly enlightened system and that of the Roman Republic, where the linkage between money and power was straightforward and uncomplicated.

Yes, that’s the thing so many leftists just can’t abide, isn’t it?

And yet, it isn’t just under capitalism that money and power are so inextricably entwined. It’s so in any human society. Look at the Soviet Union, where despite all the soaring rhetoric about their classless society, Leonid Brezhnev kept a fleet of sports cars (made in capitalist countries, naturally) at his various estates and amused himself tearing around in his Ferraris and Porsches like some hulking unibrow James Bond wannabee.

A classless society is an impossibility. People are not all equally smart, equally beautiful, equally hardworking, equally gifted in rhetoric, equally anything. It’s not fair, but the only people who can reasonably believe life is fair are under five years of age.
