It is toy companies fault when they market toys that cost so much money. For example, that Biscuit I keep hearing about but not sure exactly what it is. It's like $150 (or more, I don't really know or care). It's one thing to advertise $10 or $20 toys but another when everything is $50 or $100 or $400 (PS3 anyone?). I don't feel bad telling my kids they can't get everything but nothing is affordable anymore!

It is totally Walmart's fault. Every other retailer gives out a ticket of some sort before the store opens to avoid the rush of 2000 shoppers. This was totally avoidable. Or the other option is, have enough stock on hand, rather than 10 televisions for 2000 customers to fight over. In either case, this was heartbreaking and I am mortified to call myself a New Yorker.

The turkey was okay, but the gravy was great. One of these years I'll cook a brined breast, roast the dark meat unbrined and make the gravy from that. But somehow the idea of not having a whole turkey to display doesn't seem quite right.

I never make turkey on Christmas. Usually ham, and once in a while if I get grandiose ideas, prime rib. You?

I know what you are feeling. I miss my Grandma Ethel so very much. And the hardest part is knowing that my children are unable to be blessed by knowing her. I was in search for a book that I remembered having as a child. The God Golden Book. I kept from buying it because I knew I use to have it. Well, when I made it back to my parents house for a visit, I looked through my old boxes and found it. I opened up the cover and almost cried. I remembered the book..but didn't remember that is was my grandma Ethel who gave it to me. So now I can at least have that and my many memories to pass to my children. And I now know why it was so special to me.

I do hope you all had a happy Thanksgiving. How was the turkey and gravy?? Our Deepfried was flavorful and yummy. Mom got the gravy from a local grocerystore...not the boxed I thought she was going to use. I am sure it was not as tasty as yours...but still good. What is on the menu for Christmas?

Yes you did! I just discovererd your blog yesterday and loved it. Sorry for the cheap plagiarism but it fit so well.
To me, the root cause of this and other instances like it, is the consume and spend mentality of the populace. People were so absorbed with getting the great deal on stuff to "keep up with the Jones' " that the crowd not only trampled this man, but stomped over the people that were trying to help him. It's disgusting and truly sad that this is where some people are in life.
Time for a reality check.

Shocked and appalled... just maybe not as much as some folks. Tyler Durden's Americana coming home to roost.

"...an entire generation pumping gas, waiting tables; slaves with white collars. Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes, working jobs we hate so we can buy shit we don’t need."

I can't imangine anything in that store that was needed so bad someone had to die over it. Cheap chinese crap at 30-60% off. What a bargain. Mao would be proud.

To call Ms Russell immoral and ignorant shows that you are reading through the left lense of your glasses. Only someone from the left would choose to use the phrasing you did in your post. It only goes to show that what Ms
Russell, originally, wrote was the truth and nothing but the truth. I guarantee you her children are much better off being home schooled than being in a public school administered by the left!

<i>"Perhaps you’d do better to get your face into a dictonary...teachers who know the actual meaning of words and are able to convey that information to children..."</i>

Perhaps instead of writing insulting comments, you ought to read what I actually wrote:

“So I explain what retarded (stress on second syllable) is..."

This means that I explained what the word meant. I just didn't think that typing out all the dictionary definitions on the blog the way you did would make for interesting reading. The kids and I actually had quite a long discussion of what the word means, in both its verbal and adjectival forms. I'm not exactly clear on why you would think I need to "get [my] face into a dictionary" (an, um, interesting way of phrasing it) after I wrote that I explained the meaning to them.

As to whether I'm retarding their advancement, well, since you've never met my children or me, and since you don't read my blog very carefully, I don't think you're in much of a position to judge.

So, you proved Joy correct. How ignorant you are. Worse - a bad parent - some would consider immoral.

"So I explain what retarded (stress on second syllable) is, and how retard (stress on first) is a horribly mean name that schoolkids used to use as an insult meaning “dummy” when I was in school, but which isn’t at all nice, and which they must never call anyone."

Perhaps you'd do better to get your face into a dictonary and away from opining on a blog. Better yet, get your kids into a real school, with real teachers - teachers who know the actual meaning of words and are able to convey that information to children - rather than have them grow up ill-informed ignorant demented fools.

Here are definitions:

Retard - To impede or delay; cause to proceed slowly. To become delayed. Hinder

Retardate - A mentally retarded person.

Retarded - Relatively slow or backward in mental or emotional development or in academic achievement.

Will your children be considered retarded by other well informed people due to your mis-information? Even though they are not retardate are you retarding their advancement?

I think so.

I don't know where you live, Markus, but in my circles, I have yet ever to hear any conservative express a desire to see the president-elect come to harm. I'm sure there are people who do, but I don't know any.

I note, btw, that you chose to ignore the gracious sentiments I expressed in my original post, and to focus instead on a word used by someone who commented on the post. If you surf enough conservative blogs, you'll find far more posts like mine about Obama's election than you will insults or threats. Nevertheless, people on the left choose to ignore what thoughtful conservatives say and highlight only those remarks which make our side look bad. See, for example:

...really, demoncrats?

That's patriotism for you, huh?

A large portion of our country's electoral system is based on the two-party system.
All the hate in the world won't make Democrats go away.
Why bother with the excessive, petty anger/rudeness?
It's not flattering at all, and yes-
it makes your entire party look bad.

If Obama is shot, America can be sure the assasin is an overzealous conservative.
I hear statements to the effect of "hanging Obama from a tree with the rest of the n-----, killing his black a--, etc." ...from ardent McCain supporters.
Not saying all Republicans are this way, but either way- there's a difference between ridiculous levels of hate and "calling a duck a duck."

Why not "be nice to the Dems?"
...I mean, really..come on.
Get over it. He won.
He ran a great campaign, and that can't be blamed on circumstance.

This was a beautiful way to honor your grandmother.

Because none of my children were able to meet their great grandparents, I followed in the footsteps of my Eastern European Jewish heritage & when choosing names for my children, each one of the three of them is named in part for one of their grandparents.

This was my of staying connected to my family & honoring my beloved grandparents.

I'm so sorry for your pain. I know that saying your grandmother is now in a better place won't completely get rid of your hurt, but perhaps it may make your heart feel a little less heavy.

E-m: To me, rice seems pretty easy once it's dried. I just sweep it up with a broom. It's next to impossible when still damp and sticky.

Bowden: You did??? I thought you liked the strictly political ones best. And of course the ones with pictures of the dog.

We're probably just beginning to see the fallout from the dysfunctional marriage of capitalism and socialism in the American (and global) economy. Lord knows I'm no economist, and there are people who understand it all a lot better than I do. Unfortunately, some of those people who supposedly understand it so well are the exact same people who helped make the mess in the first place.

Thanks for visiting and commenting, e-mama.

Brigette, I do hope you are feeling better soon!

I hate to intrude on an otherwise lovely war of prose. However, I have just been cordially introduced to this blog. Besides my quick 'hello', I will mention that the problems seem to stem from the interface between socialism and free markets. That is, the fact that organizations such as Fanny and Freddy were acting very much like free market enterprises, but were not subject to the same downside risk as a truly free market enterprise would have experienced.

Although I probably do not have all the details memorized as you do, I do find it interesting that terrorists attacks tend to happen when Republicans are in office.

"I suppose one can’t expect logic from the insane."

Well I've tried, and failed, to engage you in rational, polite discourse.

Obviously, the more you lose an internet debate, the more personal your attacks become. You should know Dan that the last act of the desperate mind is the personal insult.

Congratulations for proving my point.

I won't bother with you anymore.

Never said it was all the Democrats fault, just most of it.

Sen. McCain warned in 2005/2006 of the impending trouble of Fannie/Freddy and the Dems prevented his bill which would have reformed these two institutions, possibly preventing much of the finanical trouble we're in.

Also, some of the hijackers were in the country on EXPIRED visas. Some where on "student visas".

Sorry Dan, your revisionism doesn't pass the smell test.

To keep of all the immigrants we dramatically need to reduce the mind-bogling number of immigrants allowed in this nation. We paid a terrible price for this attack because of the failed and still broken immigration problem.

Oh, and here is but one bit of my evidence on the failed visa story:

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A border agent said Monday that the suspected ringleader of the September 11 attacks raised enough red flags at customs -- including having the wrong student visa -- that he should been prevented from entering the United States.

Customs agent Jose E. Melendez-Perez, testifying at a public hearing on border and aviation security, said lead hijacker Mohamed Atta's age and impeccable clothes also appeared to contradict his story about being a student.

"I would have recommended refusal," Melendez-Perez said.
-------------------------------------------

Don't engage in revisionism Dan. It's intellectually dishonest. Now if you didn't know about the visa situation than I'll excuse you on that. But that would mean you're ignorant of the facts now, wouldn't it?

Hahaha. Bush and the GOP set six different budget deficit records *and* the Bush admin is the originator of the bailout plan but somehow its all the Democrats fault, right? Then again just a month ago you were still flogging the idea that Obama isn't a natural born citizen even though he had released his birth certificate three months earlier so I suppose one can't expect logic from the insane.

I love your crocodile tears over the budget deficit which is caused almost entirely by the Bush bailout plan and the $150B we're spending per year in Iraq, another Bush legacy. Where were your cries of outrage while Bush and the GOP were adding $4 Trillion to the federal debt in just 7 years?

GOP controls all three branches of the federal government for 5 years, does nothing about out-of-control subprime market: Totally cool.

GOP controls two branches and Dems control 1 branch for 1.5 years, none do anything about out of control subprime market: ALL THE DEMOCRATS FAULT.

Isn't it funny how the PLO didn't manage to murder over two hundred US Marines until Reagan got in office? Imagine that.

By the way Bowden, all the 9/11 hijackers were in the country on completely legal student visas which not even the most right wing wackjob Pat Buchannan isolationist "no more brown people" immigration plans have proposed changing. Do you ever bother learning any facts about something before you form your opinion on it?

You don't seem to be able to differentiate correlation from causation, or either from coincidence.

Interesting story on what electing Democrats to Washington gets you, From AP:

The federal government began the new budget year with a record deficit of $237.2 billion, reflecting the billions of dollars the government has started to pay out to rescue the financial system.

The Treasury Department said Thursday that the deficit for the first month in the new budget year was the highest monthly imbalance on record. It was far bigger than analysts expected, over four times larger than the October 2007 deficit of $56.8 billion, and more than half the total for all of last year.

The big surge reflected the government spending $115 billion to buy stock in the nation's largest

"That’s some awesome revisionist history you’re engaged in Bowden. Where is the evidence that liberals never gave Bush a chance? Your own anecdotal observations?"

Dan,

YOu can't have it both ways. You used your one sighting of an anti-Obama supporter as evidence of Obama derangement syndrome on the right. I retort in kind and you call me a "revisionist" and delusional.

If the shoe fits buddy. I can see you can dish it out, but Lord knows you can't take it.

Uhmmm...Dan...we in the Republican party don't run away and hide from out mistakes. Many of us condemned Bush's lax immigration policy and lack of immigration enforcement which contributed to the attacks on 9/11.

We don't give him a pass.

You and yours though spend many long nights toiling many hours making excuses for the Democratic induced depression that the economy is now in. The economy was great prior to the Dems taking congress in January of '07.

There comes a time when a party realizes that accecpting responsibility for their actions and mistakes is important to leading a nation. The Dems still haven't learned to accept responsibility.

They'll be the end of us.

That's some awesome revisionist history you're engaged in Bowden. Where is the evidence that liberals never gave Bush a chance? Your own anecdotal observations?

I've listened to Rush and Hannity and the local guy (on 770KOB) Villanucci quite a bit since Nov 4 and 80% of their callers are already calling for Obama's head. Rush and Hannity both personally blamed Obama for the stock market drop in the middle of last week.

Carter came into office under very bad circumstances and didn't handle it well, but the hostage crisis can be laid at Eisenhower's feet, not his. Or are you one of those people that think that all things happen in a vacuum? Are you under the impression that the Iranian revolution had nothing to do with US intervention? Are you also one of those people who think the 9/11 attacks were completely unprovoked and were done because they "hate us for our freedom?"

Things were crappy under Carter but at no point during his administration did we invade a foreign country for no reason whatsoever and at no point under his administration was the US & world economy in danger of complete collapse. Carter was not a good president, but Bush Jr is Carter squared.

The degree of self-delusion you have to be operating under to believe that the Bush admin didn't start having troubles until the Dems took congress back is astounding. Which Dem was at fault for the appointment of Donald Rumsfeld? Alberto Gonzales? Scooter Libby? The attempt to shoehorn the completely unqualified Harriet Myers into the Supreme Court? Was it Nancy Pelosi that appointed a horse breeder with no relevant experience to head FEMA? Was it Harry Reid who engaged in a propaganda campaign to invade Iraq based entirely on lies and forgeries? Do you really need me to enumerate all the ways in which Bush has been a total disaster which have nothing to do with the Democrats?

Isn't it funny how Al Qaeda didn't manage to successfully destroy the World Trade Center until the Republicans regained control of the executive branch?

Imagine that.

Honestly, I'm not defending Bush because he pretty obviously has nothing whatsoever to do with the bailout. He's the ultimate lame duck and has been for most of a year already.

" Plenty of us gave him a chance in 2000-2001. As it turns out of course, he didn’t deserve the chance we gave him and will most likely go down in history as the worst president of the entire modern era."

Oh please. You found one non-Obama voter with a "He's not my President" sticker on his car, assumed said driver was a Republican, and used that as evidence of the entire Republican movement being un-diplomatic over their loss.

From day one of the Bush Administration the liberals were screaming,"Selected, not elected". Day one.

The hate factor is about 5-1 from Dems to Reps Dan.

No, he won't go down as the worst. No one can take that away from Jimmy "Hostage" Carter.

Note, the Bush administration didn't start having troubles until the Democrats took over congress in 2007.

Another way to say it is: I'm a market guy, except when a combination of excessive deregulation of the market and government manipulation of the market have left it in a position where if we don't step in, the whole world economy is quite likely to collapse irrevocably.

There's plenty of blame to spread around for why the market is so screwed up (from both the GOP and the Dems and from the Wall Street types that play both sides against each other and get rich off it) but now that the crisis is here I prefer to allow the top financial experts and economists in the world decide how to fix the problem. Certainly moreso than Neil Cavuto, who as far as I can glean has no education in finance or economics whatsoever and is a career journalist.

I would argue that a purely free market wouldn't have gotten us into this position to begin with (I too am a "free market guy") but we've never had a truly free market and none of the "free market guys" out there seem to be able to come up with a free market solution to the problem. Not even Alan Greenspan. Maybe Bill O'Reilly or Keith Olbermann have the answer though.

Hope you and your kids feel better.

Which "the liberals" are you talking about that never gave Bush a chance? Plenty of us gave him a chance in 2000-2001. As it turns out of course, he didn't deserve the chance we gave him and will most likely go down in history as the worst president of the entire modern era.

This is what I'm trying to get across to you. *You* may be giving Obama a chance, but there are plenty of conservatives that aren't, or are only pretending they will until they can see what he actually does so that they can know what to be against.

Basically, your saying "the liberals" didn't give Bush a chance is no more valid than me saying "the conservatives" won't give Obama a chance.

"Who was the last small-government conservative president in your opinion Bowden? The closest I can come up with is Ford.

I’m happy to hear you’re going to give Obama a chance but what chance."

What do you mean by "What chance"? I'm willing to give him a year to enact the correct legislation and work out the problems in the economy and the foreign policy.

I will criticize him when he's wrong prior to that though.

Let's just say I'll give him more of a chance than the liberals ever gave President Bush.

"Regardless, you’re ignoring the point. Most Dems didn’t just reject Bush outright. They rejected him after he proved that he’s and incompetent who surrounded himself with corruption and more incompetence. This national GOP meme"

I'm sorry, you stated this all occured before the 2004 election though. I pointed out that despite all their "misgivings" as you had pointed out they seemed pretty comfortable re-electing the man in 2004.

And you're correct, he didn't govern well. He was more of a liberal big-government Democrat than a fiscal conservative.

Oh well, let's give Obama a chance to see how he does. What do you say?
